Beyond The surface is a university project tackling the idea of ‘inside vs outside’ while taking a deeper look within the spaces of urban art. An exploration of the history, techniques, legality and artists behind the art.

The editorial tries to tackle the idea of inside vs outside by relating the themes of freedom, censorship and creativity with expression of art in a public space. It was also important to showcase the contrasts found in the visible colourful exterior of street art with the often hidden stories and intentions behind it.

The editorial was also designed on this concept, having very vibrant outer covers while using a simple monochromatic interior design. The contrast between the colourful exterior, the black-and-white interior and use of images invites readers to look beyond the surface and appreciate the depth, often overlooked, that street art provides.
